Environmental BadgeThe Environmental Health Department (EHD) is tasked with the enforcement of the State’s public health laws, county ordinances & local orders within Fort Bend County. The EHD has a criminal enforcement unit, known as the Environmental Enforcement Unit, which utilizes trained Environmental Investigators who are Texas Peace Officers. This program was brought about because of the ever increasing problem of unlawfully discarded waste. From the small beginnings of the program, it has evolved into a unit that not only investigates the illegal dumping of wastes, but also investigates public nuisance properties, junked vehicles, unlawful disposal of used motor oil and lead acid batteries, used tire dumping, unlawful use of business dumpsters, and disposal of chemical and commercial business waste.

The goal of this unit is to investigate environmental health violations on public and private proprieties within the unincorporated areas of Fort Bend County. This includes violations of the Texas Health & Safety Code, Texas Water Code, Texas Penal Code and Texas Transportation Code. In addition to responding to complaints received, these Investigators proactively patrol the county looking for violations and tracking down those who do not respect the environment.

Summary of duties:

  • Investigates Illegal Dumping and Violations of the Texas Water Code
  • Responds to complaints about littering and public nuisance properties
  • Enforces the County’s Commercial Waste Hauler’s Ordinance & other local Health Orders and Ordinances.
  • Inspects local auto salvage yards and cement plants for environmental compliance
  • Manages the county’s “Adopt-a-County Road”
  • Provides education through public outreach programs and public events
The unit works closely with the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC) and with other regional law enforcement agencies allowing for inter-agency cooperation and investigations.

The Unit does not take the lead in investigations or offenses within the cities limits of Arcola, Fulshear, Houston, Katy, Kendleton, Missouri City, Needville, Rosenberg, Richmond, Sugar Land or Stafford. Please contact those respective cities for environmental complaints.
