The Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation Department is pleased to announce that on August 18, 2016 the Department of Justice (DOJ) certified the Fort Bend County Juvenile Detention Center as PREA compliant. The Center was found to be in compliance with all 41 of the PREA standards. We are only the eighth County operated juvenile facility in the State of Texas to be certified.
The Fort Bend County Juvenile Detention Center has always provided exceptional service to the youth in our facility and achieving this certification simply confirms our continued commitment to provide excellent services to the youth and families of Fort Bend County.
The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed with unanimous support and is the first Federal Law passed dealing with sexual abuse of incarcerated persons. The purpose of the Prison Rape Elimination Act was to provide for the analysis of the incidence and effects of prison rape in Federal, State, and local institutions and to provide information, resources, recommendations, and funding to protect individuals from prison rape. The act created the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission and charged it with developing standards for the elimination of prison rape. The PREA standards establish strict requirements for facilities to ensure safeguards are in place to provide for the sexual safety of those housed in prisons, jails, and juvenile detention and corrections centers.
The hard work of our Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation Department staff, along with the direction and support of the Fort Bend County Juvenile Board has enabled us to achieve this certification which would not have been possible without their dedication.
