A jury convicted Randy Ruiz Alfaro of Assault Family Violence in only 20 minutes on October 25, 2017. The 23 year-old Pasadena man was arrested after Sugar Land police officers responded to a disturbance in the parking lot of the Sam’s Club at 351 N. SH 6 in April of 2017. According to Assistant District Attorney Craig Priesmeyer, Ruiz Alfaro was involved in a physical disturbance with his girlfriend which caught the attention of multiple witnesses. The influx of 911 calls prompted a hasty response by the Sugar Land Police Department. The arresting officer immediately noticed the presence of injuries on Ruiz Alfaro’s girlfriend. While on scene, the arresting officer spoke with an eyewitness to the assault which corroborated the injuries and ultimately led to the arrest of Ruiz Alfaro.
“The defendant began by abusing his girlfriend verbally,” said Priesmeyer; lead prosecutor on the case. “Then he asked her, ‘do you want to unleash the devil?’ and that is exactly what he did.” The evidence showed that Ruiz Alfaro put his victim in a reverse chokehold and struck her five to six times.
Ruiz Alfaro was tried in County Court at Law No. 1 before Presiding Judge Christopher G. Morales. Assault Family Violence is a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a fine up to $4,000. The Court sentenced the defendant to 187 days in the Fort Bend County Jail.
