Application Requirements
The Texas Legislature has passed a new law effective January 1, 2022, permitting buyers to file for homestead exemption in the same year they purchase their new home. This will allow for a qualifying new home to be eligible for a homestead exemption from the date of purchase. Previously homeowners had to wait until the next year to file for the homestead exemption.
Effective September 1, 2011. House Bill 252 imposes new requirements for those property owners who apply for General Residential Exemptions, Over-65 Exemptions, Disability Exemptions, 100% Disabled Veteran Exemptions and Extension of Exemptions for a Surviving Spouse.
Exemption applications filed at the Central Appraisal District on or after September 1 must include a copy of the applicant’s Texas Driver’s License or DPS Identification Card. Address on the driver’s license or identification card MUST be the same as the address on which you are filing an Application for Residence Homestead Exemption.
“These mandated changes have been issued in an effort to prevent property owners from applying for homestead exemptions on more than one property”. Turner added, “These applications must be filed with the Fort Bend Central Appraisal District, 2801 B F Terry Blvd, Rosenberg, TX 77471, Phone 281-344-8623.”
